Dave’s Perspective: It was cool when I got started this morning. Low humidity and a cloudless sky. About 20 minutes later, there were clouds everywhere. No rain, just clouds. I ended up leaving my jacket on for the first half of the ride. By then it was really humid.
I saw a total of 12 deer this morning. Three different fields had deer eating breakfast in the soybean fields. Something spooked five deer and they took off running. I tried to keep up as we were on sort of a parallel route. They we ahead of me and then made a move to cross the road. Four of them bound easily across. The fifth little guy stopped at the edge and just looked at me. I has to slow down since I didn’t really know what he was going to do. I gave him some space and he followed the others across and into the trees. I also saw another deer standing in some trees a little farther down the road. He looked like he was trying to decide between soybeans and corn.
Today was the last full day in Kansas. I am still about 30 miles from Missouri. I am planning to get to a little place northeast of Joplin tomorrow morning. Some thunderstorms are predicted for the afternoon so I will have to hustle right along. My first two hours are easily my most productive. Hour three drops off some. After that it can be a real struggle for me. Everything is tired and I have trouble staying comfortable. I get through it but it wears me out.
Today I went 52.3 miles. Total is now 1102.1 miles.
Pretty country today. Wonderfully interesting skys. I ate breakfast on the way this morning. Dave wanted to get as far as Almont. When I reached that cute little town, I found no sleeping accommodations. So I drove on until I located a motel: Columbus. This was 25 plus more miles, so I waited for Dave. When he rode up, he definitely looked done for the day. This humidity really takes the energy out of him. We put his bike on the car, and drove to our motel. Columbus has a few options for dining, but we ended up at a Pizza Hut. We went grocery shopping and then retired for the day. There is a rodeo happening today, but it doesn’t begin until 8:00 pm. No way we can start an outing at that time of night. More tomorrow.
